Look at the
Iris above. Beautiful in form and function, and a far cry from the typical vibrator on the market. Sex toy innovations are nothing new to
Lelo - this company has taken perceptions of the sex toy market and turned them on its head. These toys combine form with function and pay special attention to what needs, wants, and desires a woman needs to pleasure herself.
The company headquarters are located at Stockholm, Sweden. However, their toys have international appeal. Wondering where the name Lelo came from? It stands for Luxury Erotic Lifestyle Objects - you can tell that they take their designing seriously.
I had an opportunity to speak with Eric Kalen, one of Lelo's talented designers. Prior to working with Lelo, Eric designed his own jewelry brand and had been a highly sought after industrial design consultant. Both of these experiences have served him well in his position at Lelo.
The first thing on my mind: why. Why choose to specialize in luxury sex toys out of all the paths available to him?
Eric Kalen: It's in our nature to surround us with objects that makes us feel good. Sex is about well being and one of our absolutely most basic needs. So why wouldn't we surround ourselves with great sex toys? What we see on the market is an on going change and we are still in the early stage to reach a more female friendly market. Now the question is - what kind of development process does a toy have to go through in order to make it to market?
Eric: We have females involved in the design process such as sexologists and test panels. For designers it's always about collecting the right information and transforming it into a product.
We base our choice of material on our research and knowledge. For LELO the different materials create effects to the surface that stimulates the eye and the feeling (surface) of the product. Now for the designers view on how well accepted sex toys are in general society. I've always (obviously) been a fond believer that what goes on in the bedroom, stays in the bedroom. Others don't share my viewpoint.
Eric: Sex in the city (TV Show) and the media has opened up the market for luxury sex toys! Today people want something that feels sensual, private, and luxurious and couples are self-confident about what they need and use in bed today. LELO want to raise the awareness and standards in the sex toy industry with our well designed quality objects. We strive to get away from the mainstream look of toys and create erotic beautiful features on our objects. (and just taking a look at these wonderful pictures shows that they succeeded very well on this point)
LELO doesn't have any political, religious or educational ambitions. We strive to deliver high-quality alternatives to existing sex products, without taboos or prejudice, arousing and stimulating for both users and their partners. With LELO's not so in your face sex toy products we have noticed that customers and media accept and agree to the display and use of sex toys.
Now to dig for some inside information! Let's see what Lelo has coming up in the years to...ahem...come!
Eric: During the fall we are releasing 2 new products. 2007 - 2008 will be a product development year so we hope to deliver many new LELO toys over the coming years. Now for some sound advice for newbies that would love to work in the sex toy industry.
Eric: Have an interest for sex, a team of designers, CAD engineers, soft and hardware designers. A great understanding for the market and the end consumer.I would like to thank
Lelo for spending their time answering these questions, and I look forward to seeing their upcoming sex toys!
